It was just recently that I read 's fantastic tutorial on colors:
After of which, I decided I would try and apply what I had learned to revamping my snow tileset, which you can see briefly on the album cover of "March of the Dimeri". I had never been very happy with my tilesets, and I think it's in part that my colors just simply sucked. Sky was blue, dirt was brown, snow was white, grass was green. Boooring. I really needed to move forwards, and I sat there and experimented with several tundra nighttime palettes until I found a good one. This was my ref: [link] Probably not the best I can do, but a good color scheme nonetheless. You can say I was very inspired by Cave Story, with it's sharp angular 45 degree transition tiles and bright yellow dirt. Well, I also inflicted a little bit of my own personality into this tileset, and drew it in a foreshortened axometric perspective with a little cutout of the ground so you could see the depth of the snow.
I really think there's a lot of potential in this tileset for things like hiding items in snow, making little snow caves, frozen water, hidden tunnels or getting crazy with the pine trees. I still need to do the background, though. I've been toying with some ideas, and I think I'll make my backgrounds out of mini tiles, like some of the Yoshi's Island backgrounds: [link] If you have any ideas for stuff I could add, or things I should go back and fix, go ahead and tell me in the comments. Oh! And the three characters you see are Riven, Platino (duh) and a sneaky Dimeri to demonstrate the multi-layered ground effects. Can you find it now that I've raised the snow?
==UPDATE 4/29/13==
More than tripled the size of the map.
Added water, ice, spike, stump and background pine needle tiles.
Made the snow much deeper and added more height transitional tiles.
Made the grass have a bit more depth.
Fixed some wonky areas of thickness on the pine trunks.
Added a more complete background. (Still need to add more shines)
Increased color count from 15 to 27... -.-

Ahh, this looks really cool, I love the retro game feel here! I especially like the details you put into the texture of the trees and branches. I think the experimental colour scheme came out really well, too - it seems to make it more atmospheric than the standard colours you mentioned in the description. Nice stuff.
